Are London lecturers going to lose their jobs? 1 Year, 1 Month ago Karma: 1
Everyone is being squeezed in this recession there is no doubt about it. Most sectors have really been whittled down however I thought that education was a recession proof job? Education is an ongoing service that surely cannot be decreased any further?

Apparently universities are thinking of cutting back on their lecturers in order to cut back on costs.

Around 2000 London jobs could go from this alone! Madness!

What confuses me is that this year, more students then ever are going to university. That means more tuition fees and more accommodation fees. Then there is money from washing machines, on campus shops etc – so why do they suddenly feel the need to cut back on lecturers? Can they suddenly not fund themselves or are they using the recession as an excuse to cut back on costs? Please someone fill me in because I do not understand…
I am going to university in September and I am paying £3 225 (I think) on tuition for this year. Surely if they are going to cut back on lecturers and cut back on the service I am paying for, I should be paying less? Wishful thinking anyway!!

Hi Emily,

Firstly, I have to say NOTHING is recession proof apart from births and deaths, both are absolutely 100% Guaranteed business regardless of social or political circumstance.

Being a student means learning something that is not 'unique' and the information can probably be seen or found easily outside of an educational establishment circle, so most of which can be self taught.

In my experience, as an ex student who incidentally did not finish 'studying' as I had to make a priority choice and 'wake up' to continue working and pay bills , mortgage etc what you are asking is very subjective regarding the student population as personally I think studying is regarded more as fashion and an 'escape' rather than a way to 'progress' in life.

So much to say yet where do I start.

If I had the chance to study again and go to Uni for example, would I do it ? The answer is no, I would not. unless I was looking for something. I am intelligent enough and practical enough, self motivated and have lots of 'life experience' to get me through to earn a living and personally I believe that education is very important but we do not require lecturers to provide us with information, I think the education system like University , in general is very easy to get into and a lot of students are pompous idiots with not much common sense ( Remember I have been there full time and I really enjoyed my life as a student BUT it didn't really 'do me any good' apart from gaining self satisfaction and ' a comfortable and safe establishment in which to become a part of and I loved it, felt safe among it and work hard in my 'chosen' subject yet I only touch upon my 'studied' subject nowadays.

I believe that studying is, dependent on which field, actually an observation class and rather a bit of a luxury when compared to 'real life', as really, unless the study you are involved in is absolutely specialised enough to warrant lecturers and indepth knowledge, then really the subject you are learning can actually be self taught. Which leads to the aggressive requirement of qualification, self taught can give knowledge yet cannot pass an exam, without the exam you get no certificate. Two people, one with and one without certificates of examinations passed, will produce two personal scenarios when looking for a job and chances are the one with certificates , won't actually be employed in their field, if they actually want to work in their passed field anyway and the trend lately is for graduates to be employed in aggressive sales and in thes many cases which are very frequent, what is the point in expensive study and expensive lecturers ?

So on to your question again, you mention washing, accommodation and general student requirements, which of course produces jobs in itself, nad I think the whole student life thing is a great experience BUT with so many students studying just for the sake of studying , should the education sector really be that recession proof ? Bob the builder with no qualifications yet all the fundemental skills , common sense and good will in life required to start a new world is also struggling yet many students think they are better and immune to lifes pitfalls because they are the next generation of knowledge yet knowledge often has to be used physically and in ways that we never imagined when we were students so who is more important ? You or bob the builder ? Then ask yourself why you are studying and is it a life long commitment you are studying for ? If you can't say that you are what you are studying ( many other students for sure, cannot commit wholly to their studies, and no offence, remember I am an ex student) then that should answer partly, why lecturers and education is not recession proof and that if you are passionate about your field, you should not need a lecturer and rather only require an advisor and a way of gaining the examination certificate which you will no doubt require when you end your studies and move into the then strange world of reality and real working life.

Would I provide funding for studying as I know it ? No I wouldn't
Would I provide life skills funding and social awarenes skill funding ? Yes I would.

Am I concerned that the education system will go to ruin ? Not at all as a recession is a learning curve for society and education and the education system will always be around, education is a business just like any other , certificates of qualification can be bought onlie at discount prices but away from these excuses, just why should the education system be recession proof ?

No offence meant at all and I wish you all the best.
